Recording is a paid Workspace feature, and the two most common ways people use Meet — a free Gmail account, and Business Starter — do not include it at all. Recording your Mac's own audio is the route that does not depend on anyone's plan. Usually they have not. Google gates Meet recording by Workspace edition, and the list of editions that include it does not cover the ones most people are actually in. - **A free Gmail account has no Meet recording.** If the call was set up from someone's personal Google account, nobody in it can record through Meet. - **Business Starter has no Meet recording either.** This one catches people out, because it is a paid plan — paying for Workspace does not mean paying for recording. - **Even on a supported edition, an admin can disable it.** The organisation policy sits above your account. - **And you must be in the host's organisation.** Joining from another domain means no recording, regardless of what your own account can do elsewhere. Google Meet also has no equivalent of Zoom's per-participant _Allow Record_. A helpful host cannot hand you recording rights; their only option is to record it themselves and share the file afterwards. ## What macOS gives you, and what it doesn't Because Meet runs in a browser tab, people reach for the built-in screen recorder — **Shift-Command-5** — as the obvious fallback. It records the screen and your microphone. It does not record the audio your Mac is playing. The result is a video of the call with only your own voice on the soundtrack: the one half you already had. Capturing everyone else requires a recorder built for system audio, which is what makes this a tools question rather than a settings question. ## Recording a Google Meet call with Mumr 1. **Check whether Meet can record at all.** If the host is on Business Standard or above and is happy to record, take that — a recording everyone can see beats a private one. 2. **Open Mumr before you join.** Meet calls start briskly and the useful part is often the first two minutes. 3. **Approve the two macOS prompts.** Microphone and system-audio recording, once, on first run. 4. **Join the call in your browser as usual.** Mumr records what your Mac plays, so the tab, the account, and your role in the call are all irrelevant to it. 5. **Say that you are recording.** Meet announces its own recordings; a local recorder does not. Recording locally removes the announcement, not the obligation behind it. - **Consent.** Several US states require every participant to agree, not just one. Most of the EU works the same way, and Germany treats recording a confidential conversation without consent as a criminal matter. "I'm recording this for my own notes — say if that's a problem" costs one sentence. - **Whose meeting it is.** The reason your access is restricted is usually that the meeting belongs to an organisation with rules about its contents. Whether it should exist is still a question for the room. ## FAQ ### Why is there no record button in my Google Meet? Because recording is a paid Workspace feature and your edition does not include it. Google lists recording as supported on Business Standard and Business Plus, Enterprise Standard and Enterprise Plus, Education Plus, and the Essentials editions. Business Starter is not on that list, and a free Gmail account is not either. The button is not hidden in a menu — for those accounts it does not exist, so nothing you change on your Mac will produce it. ### Can I record a Google Meet on a free account? Not with Google Meet itself. This is the single most common reason people search for a way to record Meet on a Mac: the meeting is on someone's personal Gmail, or on the cheapest Workspace tier, and there is simply no recorder in the product. Recording your Mac's own audio works regardless, because it never asks Google for anything. ### Can a participant record a Google Meet? Only if they are in the host's organisation and have an edition that includes recording — and the host can restrict it further. There is no equivalent of Zoom's per-person Allow Record for an outside guest. If you joined someone else's Meet from a different domain, assume the answer is no. ### Does Google Meet notify people if I record on my Mac? No. Google Meet announces its own recordings to everyone in the call. A local system-audio recorder is invisible to Meet, so nothing is announced. That changes what the software says, not what you owe the other people. Several US states require every participant to consent, and most of the EU does too. Announce it yourself — one sentence is enough. ### Where do Google Meet recordings go? Into the Google Drive of the person who recorded, under a Google Meet folder, and they inherit that organisation's sharing rules and retention policy. If you attended from outside, you get a copy only if someone shares it with you deliberately. A recording made on your own Mac is a file you already have, which is a meaningfully different position to be in.
