# Free meeting transcription for Mac

Mumr turns every meeting into a transcript and a summary on your Mac, free. It records the call's audio and your microphone, transcribes on the Mac itself, and works with anything that plays sound — Zoom, Teams, Google Meet, a webinar in the browser, or a meeting room heard through your mic. Nothing joins the call, there is no account, and there is no monthly minute cap.

Short version

- **Free, with no cap.** No account, no subscription, no minutes counted. Mumr is distributed on the Mac App Store and has no paid tier.
- **Transcribed on your Mac.** 25 languages detected automatically with the default engine, 99+ with Whisper. Works offline once the model is downloaded.
- **A summary every time.** An on-device summary with no setup, or a fuller one from Apple Intelligence or an AI account you choose.
- **No bot.** Mumr records your Mac's audio, so nothing appears in the participant list. How other note takers handle this is in [AI note takers without a bot](https://mumr.app/ai-note-taker-without-bot).

## What you get from every meeting

- **The audio.** One recording with both sides of the call: everyone you hear through the Mac, and you through the microphone.
- **A transcript.** Made on your Mac by the speech engine you picked, saved as a file next to the audio.
- **A summary.** A headline and key points by default; key points, decisions and action items if you connect an AI.
- **Plain files in a folder you choose.** Export any meeting as Markdown, plain text or PDF, copy it to the clipboard, or send the notes to the meeting's invitees from your own mail app.

## How to transcribe a meeting with Mumr

1. **Install Mumr** from the Mac App Store. It needs macOS 15 or later; Apple Silicon is recommended.
2. **Approve two macOS prompts** on first run: the microphone, and screen recording, which is what grants access to system audio. Mumr does not record the screen.
3. **Start the meeting** in whatever app you use, or sit down in the room.
4. **Tell people you are recording**, then press Record. If your calendar is connected, the meeting appears in the menu bar ten minutes ahead and one click starts it.
5. **Press Stop.** The transcript is written on your Mac, then the summary from the engine you chose.

## Transcription that stays on your Mac

Capture and transcription happen on your Mac, not on a server. Mumr ships three speech engines and you can switch between them in Settings:

- **NVIDIA Parakeet** — the default. Fast on Apple Silicon, 25 European languages, detects the language without being told.
- **OpenAI Whisper** via WhisperKit — 99+ languages, for anything Parakeet does not cover.
- **Apple Speech** — the dictation engine built into macOS, no download. Mumr uses it only where macOS has an on-device model, and never its cloud fallback.

The models download once and then run offline. The trade-offs between them, and what "on-device" really covers, are on the [local transcription page](https://mumr.app/local-transcription-mac); the measured speed and accuracy are in [Parakeet vs Whisper, measured](https://mumr.app/research/local-transcription-benchmark-mac).

## Meetings that aren't in English

Parakeet covers Bulgarian, Croatian, Czech, Danish, Dutch, English, Estonian, Finnish, French, German, Greek, Hungarian, Italian, Latvian, Lithuanian, Maltese, Polish, Portuguese, Romanian, Russian, Slovak, Slovenian, Spanish, Swedish and Ukrainian, and it works out which one it is hearing. Whisper adds the rest of its 99+.

The summary is where language matters, so here is how each option behaves:

- **Quick highlights** (the default) lifts sentences from the transcript, so it stays in the meeting's language. Its ranking is tuned for English, so it is at its best there.
- **Apple Intelligence** (macOS 26 or later) supports English, French, German, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, Dutch, Danish, Norwegian, Swedish, Turkish, Vietnamese, Chinese, Japanese and Korean. It does not support Russian.
- **Your own AI** — an Anthropic, OpenAI or OpenRouter key, or a Claude Code or Codex login — writes in whatever language you ask for.

Mumr's own interface is in English for now; the transcripts and summaries are in the language of the meeting.

## The summary: free by default, fuller if you choose

Every recording gets a summary with nothing to set up. **Quick highlights** runs on your Mac with Apple's NaturalLanguage framework: no key, no account, no network. It picks out a headline and the key points rather than rewriting them.

For a summary with decisions and action items, choose one of these instead:

- **Apple Intelligence**, on your Mac, on macOS 26 or later.
- **Your own Anthropic, OpenAI or OpenRouter key.** The key lives in the macOS Keychain. The transcript text goes to that provider under your account, and its privacy policy applies.
- **Claude Code or Codex**, if you already use one, under your own login.

Mumr runs no AI of its own and has no server, so it never sees the transcript. It asks before the first cloud summary and shows which AI is active. You can also pick None and keep only the recording and transcript.

## Any meeting app — and the meeting room

Because Mumr records what your Mac plays rather than plugging into a meeting service, the platform doesn't matter. It works with Zoom, Microsoft Teams, Google Meet, Webex, browser webinars and anything else with sound, on any plan and in any role, including as a guest. Each platform blocks its own recorder in a different way; the guides cover [Zoom](https://mumr.app/record-zoom-meeting-mac), [Teams](https://mumr.app/record-teams-meeting-mac), [Google Meet](https://mumr.app/record-google-meet-mac), [Yandex Telemost](https://mumr.app/record-yandex-telemost-mac), [MTS Link](https://mumr.app/record-mts-link-mac) and [webinars](https://mumr.app/record-webinar-mac).

In a room, the microphone does the work. Put the Mac where it can hear everyone and record as usual.

## Ask your meetings in Claude

Each meeting is a folder of ordinary files, with an index Mumr keeps beside them. Point Claude Code or Codex at that folder and ask what was decided last Tuesday or who owns an action item. The answer comes from your own files on your Mac, through the assistant you already use. There is no Mumr chat and no Mumr cloud in between — see [chat with your meetings](https://mumr.app/chat).

## Before you record

Recording without a bot changes what others see in the call. It doesn't change your duty to tell them. Say you are recording at the start and get a yes. Rules differ by country and, in the US, by state; the [guide to recording a meeting on a Mac](https://mumr.app/record-meeting-mac) covers the US all-party-consent states.

## Transcribe your next meeting free

Mumr records the call's audio and your mic, transcribes on your Mac, and writes the summary. No bot, no account, no minute cap.

## FAQ

### Is Mumr's meeting transcription really free?

Yes. Recording, transcription and the default summary are free, with no account, no subscription and no monthly minute cap. The only thing that can cost money is a cloud summary you choose to run on your own AI account, and that provider bills you directly.

### Which languages can Mumr transcribe?

The default engine, NVIDIA Parakeet, transcribes 25 European languages and detects the language by itself, including English, German, French, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, Dutch, Polish, Russian and Ukrainian. Switch to Whisper in Settings for 99+ languages.

### Does a bot join my meeting?

No. Mumr records the audio your Mac plays and your microphone, so nothing joins the call and nobody sees an extra participant. You should still tell people you are recording.

### Can Mumr transcribe an in-person meeting?

Yes. Mumr records your Mac's microphone as well as its audio output, so a meeting in a room with your Mac on the table is transcribed the same way as a call. Sit the Mac where it can hear everyone.

### Can I transcribe a recording I already have?

Not today. Mumr transcribes what it records; it does not import existing audio or video files. For files you already have, a file transcriber such as [MacWhisper](https://mumr.app/compare/macwhisper-alternative) is the better tool.

### Does transcription work offline?

Yes. Once the speech model is on your Mac, transcription runs without an internet connection. Only a cloud summary, if you choose one, needs the network.
