Mumr vs MacWhisper

A free MacWhisper alternative, built for meetings

MacWhisper is a superb on-device transcription toolbox — but recording your meetings (system audio) and its larger models are paid. Mumr does the meeting job specifically: record, transcribe and summarise on your Mac, for free.

Where MacWhisper is the better choice

MacWhisper is a mature, do-everything tool, and for many jobs it's the right pick. It has system-wide dictation that can replace Apple's, batch and watch-folder transcription, YouTube and video transcription, SRT/VTT subtitle export, full-text and speaker search, a wide range of model choices (including Parakeet), more AI providers, and integrations with Notion, Zapier and Obsidian. It spans the whole Apple ecosystem and offers a one-time lifetime license. If you want a general transcription workbench rather than a meeting recorder, MacWhisper is more capable.

Where Mumr wins

Mumr is free for the exact job MacWhisper charges for: recording a meeting's system audio plus your mic, then summarising it. In MacWhisper that's behind Pro; in Mumr it's the free, default experience. Mumr is also purpose-built for meetings — record, on-device transcript, post-meeting summary with action items — rather than a toolbox you configure.

And Mumr's summary step can stay fully on your Mac: Apple Intelligence runs on-device (macOS 26+), or you can bring your own Anthropic/OpenAI key or point it at a local claude/codex CLI. MacWhisper's AI summaries go to an external provider unless you set up a local Ollama model yourself. No account, no Mumr cloud.

FAQ

Is there a free MacWhisper alternative for meetings?

Yes — MacWhisper gates system-audio (meeting) recording and the larger models behind paid Pro. Mumr records meetings, transcribes on your Mac, and summarises, all free.

Is Mumr local like MacWhisper?

Yes — both transcribe on-device. The difference is the summary: MacWhisper sends transcript text to an external AI provider unless you set up local Ollama; Mumr can summarise fully on-device with Apple Intelligence. See local transcription on Mac.

Does Mumr do dictation and subtitles?

No — Mumr is meeting-focused. MacWhisper is the broader toolbox (dictation, subtitles, batch, YouTube). If you need those, MacWhisper is the better tool.

When should I pick MacWhisper instead?

Pick MacWhisper for system-wide dictation, batch/folder transcription, subtitle export, model variety, or a one-time lifetime toolbox. Mumr is focused, free and meeting-only.
